  • You must have a valid passport issued by the government with one blank page, and it should not be the last page of the passport.

How to Apply for a Temporary Resident Visa?

Individuals can apply for a temporary resident visa using any of the below-mentioned methods:

  • Online application
  • Application in person

We recommend you apply online, as most application processes are being digitized. However, even in online applications, you are required to provide your biometrics and sit down for an interview in person. If you decide to apply in person, you will have to be physically present on multiple occasions during the whole process. 

Following the below-given steps to apply for a temporary resident visa:

Confirm Your Eligibility

Visit the official government website of Canada and click on the Immigration tab. After that, click on visit. On that page, you will find a link called “Find out if you need a visa” Click on the link and complete the survey. 

Make sure to answer each and every question truthfully. Based on your answers, it will be determined whether or not you need a temporary resident visa or if you only need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA).

In case you prove your eligibility for a Temporary Visitor Visa, you will be directed to a page where you will find instructions on how to apply. From there, you can choose to apply online or apply in person. The recommended option is to apply online for better convenience. After that, on the “Determine your eligibility and apply online” page, you have to take a survey, and you will be given a reference code along with a checklist for how to apply. Save the reference code, as it will be needed later in the process.

Create an Account

Visit the same government website again and create an account. There are two ways to open an account. You can either use the GCKey, otherwise known as the Government of Canada login key or use your bank account details to open the account. Login to the account and move to the next step.

Submit the Application

Fill out all the forms required for the application process and use the reference code to access your answers to the questionnaire.

Respond to additional requests for information.

After your application has been submitted, it will take a time of around five days to show up on your account. Your application will be processed by the Canadian Consulate in the next few weeks. It is also a possibility that you will be invited to give your biometric information, that is, fingerprints and photographs, or to give an interview. 

Send your passport for stamping.

After you have submitted all the information, you will be notified on your online account if your Canada Temporary Resident visa is approved. The Embassy can also inform you about the same when you complete your interview on time. As the next step in the process, you need to submit your passport for stamping and processing.

In the case of online applications, you will receive an email along with the necessary instructions from the Embassy, and you need to mail your passport to them along with the processing fee and the fee for the return envelope. In the case of physical applications, you need o pay the fee at the Consulate and submit your passport. 

The Consulate will process your passport and will return it to you after stamping. If you have mailed it to them, it will take a few days of time for it to arrive. After this, you can start all the preparations for your visit to Canada.
